Contracts for Data Collaboration (C4DC) is a new initiative seeking to address the legal barriers to data collaboration. Established by charter members The Governance Lab (GovLab), UN SDSN Thematic Research Network on Data and Statistics (TReNDS), World Economic Forum, and University of Washington - Applied Physics Laboratory, C4DC’s mission is to address the inefficiencies of developing contractual agreements for public-private data collaboration. As documented on The GovLab’s DataCollaboratives.org and the Data Collaboratives Explorer, cross-sector data collaboration in the interest of creating public value is rapidly emerging and creating real-world impacts. C4DC aims to accelerate the creation of public value by informing and guiding those seeking to establish a data collaborative by developing and making accessible a repository of legal documentation and related tools and resources.

The C4DC project partners are holding a workshop, which will be held in the context of the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2019, at Infosys, One World Trade Center. The workshop will convene thought leaders and decision-makers from across the public, private, and civil sectors seeking to unlock the public value of private-sector data. Participants at the event will learn from those advancing data collaboratives across sectors and our understanding of their legal basis, review an initial prototype of a C4DC online tool, and contribute to the development of a requirements sheet for legal agreements supporting data collaboration. Throughout the event, participants will connect with other stakeholders seeking new ways to responsibly leverage novel data sources and apply them in new and existing ways to advance the common good.
