About the Event

Co-hosted by TReNDS, IIASA, UNCTAD, and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, this session will demonstrate the value of citizen science for SDG monitoring. It will include a presentation of the results of a systematic review of the SDG indicators and citizen science initiatives, and will include concrete examples outlining the use of citizen science data by NSOs and UN agencies, including examples from Statistics New Zealand, The Ghana Statistical Service, and the new methodology developed by UNEP to monitor marine litter. The session will also feature a discussion on how best to ensure the quality of these data sources so that NSOs can be confident in using them, as well as recommendations on collaborations across data communities and ecosystems to achieve the SDGs and manage emergencies. The session will feature TReNDS' members, Dilek Fraisl and Jillian Campbell, and Director, Jessica Espey.
